Heritage in Lebanon: Projects Documentary
Lebanon's rich heritage has historically served as a significant cultural crossroads between East and West. However, this heritage faces considerable challenges today due to neglect and ignorance. Preserving this cultural legacy necessitates comprehensive documentation, evaluation, and strategic protection efforts.
In 2023, the "Heritage in Lebanon: Projects Documentary" initiative was launched as a pilot project aimed at conserving Lebanon's heritage. This initiative was conducted by architecture students at the Lebanese University's Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture, under the supervision of Conservation Architect Dr. Zaher Ghossaini and following the ICCROM international methodology.

Since 2011, more than 250 projects have been documented, focusing on restoration, cultural heritage, and local architecture. These projects are classified into three categories: individual sites, urban contexts (neighborhoods), and comprehensive projects in villages or towns, approved by administrative authorities.

The initiative aims to transform built heritage sites into laboratories for testing new models of urban regeneration, sustainable development, and economic growth. By uncovering previously unknown heritage sites, the initiative seeks to generate interest and support from local, national, and international authorities, positioning Lebanon alongside other nations committed to responsible tourism practices.

Supported by institutions such as the Lebanese National Library, Lebanese Universities of Architecture, local authorities, NGOs, and community members, this effort seeks to integrate documentary heritage preservation into sustainable development initiatives. By sharing the data gathered over more than a decade, the initiative aims to contribute to the long-term preservation and dissemination of Lebanon's unique cultural heritage.
